The UIndy community is playing a central role in an upcoming Indianapolis appearance by Cambodian activist Somaly Mam, who works to generate attention about the global issue of human trafficking.

Campbell

Local entrepreneur Kelly Campbell, who earned her master’s degree in International Relations from UIndy in 2006, is a key organizer behind Mam’s visit, which she discusses in a column in today’s Indianapolis Star. Read it here.

Campbell is owner and co-founder of The Village Experience, a business that organizes travel adventures and operates retail and online stores that promote tourism, free trade and human rights in the developing world. She also has been featured in UIndy’s recent ad campaign.

Mam

Mam, an internationally renowned activist, was forced into the sex trade as a child and founded an organization that helps girls escape similar plights. She recounted the experience in her 2008 book The Road of Lost Innocence and has been named a CNN Hero and one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. She also was featured in the 2011 documentary film Not My Life.

UIndy is co-sponsoring her free public appearance at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at The Sanctuary on Penn, 701 N. Pennsylvania St. She will speak and sign copies of her book, and beforehand she will meet with members of Keys, a new UIndy student organization dedicated to “unlocking the silence of human trafficking.”

Earlier that day, Mam will serve as keynote speaker for a Women Like Us Foundation tea at 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 650 N. Meridian St.
