UIndy’s international colors were on full display Thursday during the 24th annual Celebration of the Flags, the popular fall tradition that showcases the global span of the campus community.

Opening with the trademark Olympic-style flag procession, this year’s event recognized the 64 nations currently represented among UIndy students, faculty and staff. The celebration is organized each year by the university’s International Division office, which supports international students on campus as well as U.S. students studying abroad.

The program included remarks from international student Chidinma Naze, a sophomore communication major from Nigeria. She called arriving in Indianapolis and being greeted with a box of Dunkin Donuts.

“One bite in, and I thought, ‘This must be the good life,'” she quipped to the crowd on Smith Mall.

For a time, she admitted, she felt like an outsider in Indiana, but then she came to realize that the cultural diversity on campus was not a source of division, but a force that brought students together in celebration.

“Hold your head high and continue to let your light shine bright,” she said.

UIndy President Robert Manuel, who came to the university just this summer, seemed impressed by the pageantry.

“I’m experiencing all the UIndy traditions for the first time,” he said. “This is an incredible tradition.”
