Faculty and students from UIndy’s School of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery Program are collecting toiletries, over-the-counter medications and other supplies for their upcoming healthcare mission trip to the Dominican Republic, taking place Oct. 13-20 over Fall Break.
Assistant Professor Barb Winningham, coordinator of the Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner tracks in the Master of Science in Nursing program, will be leading the group of nine travelers, which also includes two OB/GYNs from Hendricks Regional Health. The group will provide OB/GYN care, perform surgeries, deliver babies and care for new mothers and babies at Good Samaritan Hospital in La Romana, the island nation’s third-largest city.
A box will be located in the lobby of Martin Hall beginning Oct. 1 to gather donations of prenatal vitamins, multivitamins, iron, pain relievers, antibiotic ointment or cream, yeast infection suppositories and creams, Selsun Blue shampoo, and baby items such as powdered baby formula, newborn diapers and new or gently used newborn clothes and light blankets. The group also is assembling care packets for new mothers, with items like travel-size soaps, shampoos, brushes, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Financial contributions also are appreciated to help the UIndy team pay for anesthetics, medications and even overnight stays for the surgery patients. Winningham is accepting checks made out to the University of Indianapolis, with “DR Mission Trip” in the memo line. She can be contacted at bwinningham@uindy.edu.
