UIndy President Beverley Pitts looks ahead to Thursday’s 22nd annual Celebration of the Flags in an opinion column published today in The Indianapolis Star.

Dr. Pitts points to UIndy’s global culture celebration — which includes a procession of national flags representing the home countries of faculty, staff and students — in addressing the divisiveness and xenophobia that seem to be casting a shadow on current events in America.

“Such activities help students realize that learning about other cultures and faiths need not threaten their own,” she writes. “They also nurture deep friendships. And perhaps most important, they prepare students to graduate with qualities that seem to be in short supply right now: appreciation and respect for individuals whose race, faith, national origin or politics are different from theirs.”
