Ex-mayor, business leaders join university Board of Trustees

Former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and four prominent business executives were named Feb. 11 to the University of Indianapolis Board of Trustees.

Other new trustees joining the board are:

  • Roland Dorson, president of the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce
  • George S. Fleetwood, president of AT&T Indiana
  • Charles J. Garcia, president and CEO of Garcia Construction Group
  • Vicki Perry, president and CEO of Advantage Health Solutions

Peterson served as Indianapolis mayor for eight years beginning in 2000, a tenure that included the establishment of charter schools, further consolidation of city and county government, and significant downtown development. He is a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and chair of the Board of Directors for the Mind Trust, which he cofounded in 2006. He practiced law in Indianapolis for several years before joining the staff of Gov. Evan Bayh, eventually serving as the governor’s chief of staff.

Dorson has served as chamber president January 2006, having joined the organization in 1991 as executive vice president. He also has served as vice president of the Indiana Retail Council, media director and caucus assistant in the Indiana state senate, and press secretary for a gubernatorial campaign. Dorson serves on a number of community boards, including the United Way of Central Indiana, Indianapolis Urban League, Center for Leadership Development, Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, Indiana Legal Foundation, Skyline Club and Asian American Alliance.

Fleetwood has headed AT&T Indiana since 2000. He joined Ameritech-Indiana (now known as SBC) in 1997 as vice president of government relations, the company’s top lobbyist in the state. He worked for nearly a decade as government affairs manager in Indiana for American Electric Power Co. He has also served as Democratic staff director for the Indiana state senate. A 1976 graduate of the University of Indianapolis, he is a member of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership and a director of both the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee.

Garcia oversees day-to-day operations for Garcia Construction Group, coordinating executive policies and procedures and directing all financial, marketing and human resource initiatives. He also is responsible for operational activities concerning construction work, including establishing and maintaining systems and processes of project management and developing cost structure and scheduling systems. Professional honors have included Indiana’s Entrepreneur of the Year and SBA Regional Construction Company of the Year. He is also is a member of numerous boards and chairs the Hispanic Business Council.

Perry has been involved in the healthcare industry for more than 30 years. Since starting Advantage Health Solutions in May 2000, she has led the health plan to achieve the NCQA Excellent accreditation and reaccreditation and implemented a successful Staff on Loan Program that encourages employees to volunteer with community charities. Previously, Perry held various executive positions with Maxicare Health Plans Inc., a national managed-care plan. She is a graduate of the IUPUI School of Nursing and has completed the Duke University Fuqua School of Administration Executive Management Course.
