Senator Bayh congratulates UIndy’s Katie Stam

U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana released the following statement Monday:

Washington — Senator Bayh today congratulated Seymour, Ind., native Katie Stam on her victory at the 2009 Miss America competition held this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Stam is the first Hoosier in Miss America’s 88-year history to win the title.

“Along with all Hoosiers, I am tremendously proud of Katie.  Her dedication to community service and advocacy on behalf of the Children’s Miracle Network make Katie an outstanding representative for Indiana and an excellent ambassador to the country for the Hoosier spirit of volunteerism,” said Senator Bayh.

Stam, a graduate of Seymour High School, is a senior majoring in communications at the University of Indianapolis. At the University of Indianapolis, she worked as the news director and the operations manager for UIndy TV, which received the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters’ 2008 TV School of the Year award. Stam was also an intern at Indianapolis television affiliates WTHR-13 and WISH-8.  She was crowned Miss Indiana in June of 2008.
