flagsThe University of Indianapolis will put some new twists on a cherished campus tradition Thursday with its 21st annual Celebration of the Flags, organized by the International Division office.

Presented each October for the campus community and the general public, the event highlights UIndy’s international flavor with an Olympic-style procession of national flags representing the home countries of current students, faculty and staff.

Starting at 2 p.m., the celebration will feature 71 nations and will take place in the Nicoson Hall gymnasium. Forecasts of inclement weather rained on the original plan to conduct the event outdoors on Smith Mall. In recent years, the site has been Schwitzer Student Center or Ruth Lilly Performance Hall.

This year’s theme, “One Song,” refers to a tune about global harmony that has become an underground hit among school groups and other organizations. UIndy’s Crimson Express vocal ensemble will perform “One Song,” and its author, New Jersey-based songwriter Mitchell Jay, will be in attendance.

One aspect of the observance that isn’t changing, fortunately, is the refreshments. As always, participants and guests will enjoy a tasty spread of international snacks and pastries after the flag procession.
