Drs. Christopher Schmidt and Gregory Reinhardt of UIndy’s Department of Anthropology will discuss their recent archeological work in Italy on Thursday during the first Faculty Forum presentation of the fall semester.
The presentation — provocatively dubbed “Adventures in Italy: Volcano Victims, Skinny Jeans, and Amazing Gelato” — will run from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 012 of Schwitzer Student Center. Bag lunches are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
Title aside, the two professors did some serious work earlier this year, with support from UIndy’s Zerfas Travel Grant program. Through skeletal analysis, they studied the diet and subsistence of the inhabitants of Herculaneum, which was destroyed along with Pompeii by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. They also visited various archaeological sites and museums, medieval villages and modern cities, documenting everything in photos. They plan to return next year for further work with Italian colleagues.
