Former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, now a Distinguished Professor of Political Science and International Relations at UIndy, will be knighted by the British government Tuesday in recognition of his important work on global issues.

In a “presentation of insignia” ceremony at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., Lugar will receive the rank of honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which is rarely bestowed on people other than British citizens. Ambassador Sir Peter Westmacott will preside over the ceremony, where UIndy will be further represented by former university President Beverley Pitts and current staffer Lara Mann, executive director of UIndy’s Lugar Academy.

The Lugar Academy’s programs include the Washington Semester, which offers a combination of expert-led classroom instruction and high-profile internship experiences in the nation’s capital for students interested in the political and policymaking process. Read more about the academy here.
