Faculty from UIndy’s Department of Music are using this week’s Spring Break as a chance to share their talents with the people of Taiwan.
Department Chair Kathleen Hacker, a soprano, and Assistant Professor Austin Hartman, a violinist, departed over the weekend on a trip organized by Professor Phylis Lan Lin, UIndy’s director of Asian Programs and associate vice president for International Programs.
The traveling group is building relationships through visits to various higher-education institutions, and the musicians will lead musical masterclasses during the week and perform two concerts, Friday in Hualien City and Sunday in Koahsiung City.
Dr. Hacker, director of vocal studies at UIndy, has sung with the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis during her extensive performance career. Hartman, who joined the university this academic year as director of string ensembles, has a distinguished resume that includes artist diplomas from Yale and Juilliard and performances across North America, Europe and Asia with his Biava Quartet.
